A growing number of congregations are forgoing traditional graggers on Purim in favor of boxes of macaroni and cheese. Congregants bring their own boxes of pasta to shake when they hear the name of Haman. After the megillah reading, the macaroni and cheese boxes are donated to a local food shelter. This fulfills the mitzvah of matanot l’evyonim, giving to the poor, that is required on Purim.
